Why Is the Long-term Care Industry in a Labor Crunch?

The health care industry’s labor shortage is hitting the long-term and post-acute care sector especially hard, in Oregon and across the nation.

Since February 2020, just before the Covid-19 pandemic took hold, 19% of long-term care workers have quit their jobs, according to a Morning Consult survey.

The Milwaukie-based Marquis Cos., which owns and operates 28 post-acute, long-term care, assisted living and memory care facilities, has seen staff openings more than triple during the pandemic.

Open positions for licensed nurses grew to 140 from 40, said Phil Fogg, Marquis’ founder, president and CEO.
