The Difference Between LTC and Retail Pharmacy – A Virtual Tour

Independent long-term care (LTC) pharmacies operate and provide care within a unique and growing space in America’s care continuum.  As demonstrated in this video, they offer unique clinical benefits to seniors residing in LTC, assisted living, and other congregate settings.

We opened our doors to Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC) earlier this year to shoot a virtual tour video of an LTC pharmacy. Watch the video to learn more about how LTC pharmacies have unique regulatory, legal, and other requirements compared to retail and other pharmacy industry groups. Explaining these differences, and why they matter when it comes to maintaining quality patient care and operational efficiency, remains and will continue to be a top educational priority of SCPC.

According to a study published by Avalere Health, titled, “Long-Term Care Pharmacy: The Evolving Marketplace and Emerging Policy Issues” the number of adults 65 and older in the US will jump to almost 80 million by 2035, an increase of 66 percent from 2015. The study says long-term care (LTC) pharmacies, versus retail and hospital pharmacies, play a unique and growing role in managing the medication and clinical needs of seniors, many of them taking up to 10 medications a day.
